Antioxidant Potential and Biochemical Properties of Wild Edible Mushrooms Used by Tribals of Eastern India

Antioxidant combat oxidative stress and play a vital role in cellular redox homeostasis maintenance leading to neutralization offree radicals that can be an important mediator of damage to cell structures resulting in various diseases. As synthetic antioxidants has adverse effect on human health, prospecting of natural sources such as plants, microflora and mushrooms is being widely investigated to isolate useful compounds having antioxidant activities. In order to identify potential sources of natural polyphenols and vitamins with promising antioxidant (AOA) and free radical scavenging activity (FRSA) 9 wild mushrooms consumed in tribal pockets of Eastern India were studied and nutritional, alkaloid (AK),phenolics contents (TPC) were assayed. The TPC varied from 4.55mg/g (Russula nigricans) to 0.9mg/g GAE (Lentinus tuberigium).Species like Russula breviceps was also found to have significant TPC.Measured in term of antioxidant components such as AA,TPC,carotenoid wild edible species of Termitomyces group such as T.microcarpus, and T.heini ranked higher than Russula and Volvoriella sps.The scavenging effect on 1,1 Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical varied from 6.1% (Termitomyces clypeatus) to as high as 90.9% (Russula nigricans). The significant antioxidant activity of R.nigricans could be due to high phenolic and ascorbic acid content as evident from the analysis. On the other hand reducing power (RPA) of methanolie extracts at 4mg/ml were in the order of T.clypeatus (4.21)~T.heimi (2.20) ~R.breviceps (1.73) ~ Termitomyces eurrhizus (1.11) ~ T.rufum (1.07).On the basis of combination of potency as FRAP assay, phenolic contents and DPPH scavenging, and antioxidant components wild V.volvaceae and Russula nigricans are identified to be most valuable in term of phototherapeutic and nutritional attribute. The study provides precise antioxidant status of 9 indigenous edible mushrooms which might serve a useful database for selecting mushroom for preparing nutritionally valuable products.
