Commercial Prospects of Milky Mushroom (Calocybe indica var.APK2) and its Chitosan Biopolymer for Plant and Human Health

Milky mushroom (Calocybe indica var.APK 2) is a tropical edible mushroom and is relatively new to the world mushroom lovers. It is of Indian origin. The technology for commercial cultivation and the new variety has been introduced for the first time from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University,Coimbatore,India.Milky mushroom loves to grow at high temperature (30-35℃),robust,fleshy with very good market appeal. It resembles button mushrooms when harvested at early stages. The commercial potential of this mushroom is yet be explored globally. The cultivation technology is comparatively simple and involves less cost of production as compared to button mushroom.Average production efficiency is 150 to 200 per cent (total yield per 1000 kg of paddy straw (dry weight) will be around 1500 to 2000 kg on fresh weight basis) which is far better as compared to any other commercially cultivated mushrooms in the world.Mushrooms could be harvested within 24-28 days of bed preparation.Total crop cycle will be 50-60 days.Hence, money flow will be very quick.Average weight of single mushroom will be 55-60 g.Under normal room temperature (28 ± 2℃) without any extra care, the mushrooms could be stored even up to 7 days.Under cold storage / Modified Atmospheric Package, the shelf life could be extended even up to one month or more.Canning, drying, pickling and other methods of value additions of milky mushrooms are also possible.Protein content of milky mushroom is 32.3 per cent and the crude fibre content is up to 41 per cent.Increased protein and fibre content speak better about milky mushroom with reference to its nutritional value. With less investment for establishing the production unit, the cost of production /kg is comparatively less than button mushroom. We have also developed high yielding strains of milky mushroom viz.,WCi2,WCi6 and WCil9 with uniform fleshing pattern. The chitosan biopolymer extracted from milky mushroom exhibited antimicrobial activity against several soil bome plant pathogens like Fusarium oxysporum f.sp.lycopersici,Macrophomina phaseolina,Rhizoctonia solani and Sclerotium rolfsii that cause vascular wilt and root rot diseases in crop plants and also against some selected human pathogens at concentrations of 1000 to 1500 ppm level.
