Ganoderma Mushrooms:Perspectives and Challenges
Ganoderma (and especially G.lucidum) is a legendary and historically superlatively treasured medicinal mushroom.In China,its recorded medicinal use can be traced back to Shennong Materia Medica,written about 100 B.C.Published records indicate that Ganoderma is increasingly generating new hope for enhanced good health,and for greater monetary earnings to mankind.The facts behind this new hope are systematically outlined and discussed.Ganodermas reported potency for treating a wide spectrum of diseases afflicting humans,for enhancing the bodys immune system,for protecting the heart and the cardiovascular system,etc.,is highlighted and discussed in the context of current alarming and unprecedented human health challenges that cause untold suffering to society,indeed globally.The potential of Ganoderma as a cash crop that can be farmed,especially in the tropics,and that can be developed to become the poor mans new gold,is also highlighted.The new perspectives and challenges related to this new hope are elaborated,and suggestions on the way forward are discussed.The authors conclusion is that Ganoderma mushrooms are biota whose time has come:whose time has come for being accorded greater attention than ever before,especially in Africa,where the biology and ecology of their members are least researched and documented.
