Effect of Ganoderma lucidum in Indian HIV Carriers

Pure culture of Ganoderma lucidum (CRS-1 isolate) was mass multiplied on half boiled and steam sterilized sorghum grains and inoculated on pretreated Cocos nucifera trunk bits,Delonix regia stem bits, paddy straw, paddy straw + saw dust (1:1),coir waste and mixed sawdust in polypropylene bags. The beds were incubated at 35±2℃ with more than 85 per cent relative humidity.Among the substrates paddy straw gave significantly superior yield (72.23 % bio-efficiency) followed by paddy straw + saw dust (1:1) and coconut trunk bits.Pinheads were formed in paddy straw at 36 days after inoculation whereas, they emerged after 44 and 48 days in paddy straw + saw dust and in coconut trunk bits respectively. After 20 days the pinheads reached a maximum size of 8.13 to 8.21 cm width. The effect of supplementation of Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi in Indian HIV carriers were investigated.Confirmed HIV-1 human subjects were selected based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria and administered with powdered formulations of the fruit body of Ganoderma lucidum for 90 days.Prior to Ganoderma lucidum supplementation and after ninety days of supplementation, the level of HIV viral load,Lymphocyte enumeration (CD3,CD4,CDs,Absolute CD4,CD8 counts),Total Leukocyte count WBC differential count,IgA,IgG,IgM and Liver function tests were estimated.Estimation of HIV viral load revealed that viral load was not increased in HIV carriers after supplementation of Ganoderma lucidum which indicates the replication of the Human Immuno Deficiency Virus was inhibited in HIV carriers. But there was no significant decrease of HIV viral load.It was observed that the mean percentage of CD4 was increased from 18.77 ± 3.25 to 23.89 ± 4.04.However,the increase was statistically significant (p<0.01).Concomitantly,the mean absolute CD4 count also increased significantly from 211.60 ± 56.97 to 355.60 ± 90.73.In the present investigation,it was very much revealed that powdered formulation of Ganoderma lucidum sporophore could significantly reduce the risk of development of AIDS in Indian HIV carriers by immune-stimulatory action.
