Study on Exploitation and Pharmacological Effect on Edible and Medicinal Mushroom Polysaccharides
Mushrooms have been used as food for centuries because of having rich and balanced nutrients with low lipid content,and have good flavor and texture.Mushrooms have received increasing attention from the researchers in the field of food and pharmaceuticals.Medicinal mushroom extracts from the genera Auricularia,Lentiuns,Pleurotus,Flammulina,Trametes,Ganoderma,Grifola,Hericium,Schizophyllum and Tremella have an established uses in traditional oriental therapies in China,Korea,Japan and other Asian countries.Many species have long been used in traditional Chinese medicines and functional foods in China.It is well known that many mushroom-extracted compounds are commonly used as immune modulators or as biological response modifiers.Polysaccharide is the polymer of aldose or ketose by glycosidic bond.It widely exists in mushroom and is one of the four basic substances.Polysaccharide from mushroom is not only major structural component of organisms but also has complicated biological activities,such as enhancing immunity,anti-tumor,antioxidant,antivirus,anti-aging,lowering blood glucose,and stimulating haematogenesis,with little side effects.Experimental and clinical studies have demonstrated that mushroom-derived polysaccharides exhibit a number of beneficial therapeutic properties.Currently,polysaccharides are also used in clinical oncology to increase the effectiveness.of chemotherapeutic preparations and reduce their side effects.Thus,it is clear that polysaccharides extracted from mushrooms have significant therapeutic potential and represent a rich source for future discovery and development of novel compounds of medical value.
