Mushrooms, A Healthy Business-Chances and Challenges
Success of the mushroom industry in the coming years will depend strongly on transforming mushrooms from cash crop to superfood.Based on present knowledge,chances are that mushroom health foods and supplements can be developed that have a positive appeal to the informed consumer.As the average consumer is not ready yet for functional foods,a push type approach is needed to spread the message,preferably through learned intermediates.A challenge can be found in the demographic changes in our ageing society that undoubtedly lead to large increases of costs of long term care.Physical exercise and use of balanced food are necessary to prevent frailty and age related disease.Mushrooms and mushroom derived food supplements could play a positive role in preventive programs.Comprehensive research is a challenge but is required to succeed.
