EFFECT OF SEEDING DATE, GROWING DEGREE DAYS AND SEED COATING ON TURFGRASS ESTABLISHMENT IN THE NORTHERN GREAT PLAINS
Limited information is available on Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) and tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) establishment in the Northern Great Plains.This research was conducted to determine the effects of seeding date,growing degree days (GDD) and seed coating on Kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue establishment in the Northern Great Plains.‘Stonewall’,‘Dynasty’,and ‘Grande II’ tall fescue,and ZEBA coated and uncoated ‘Turf Saver’ tall fescue and ‘Turf Blue’ Kentucky bluegrass were seeded once a month during the 2009 and 2010 growing season.Tall fescue showed higher turfgrass coverage and quality than Kentucky bluegrass at all seeding dates.Tall fescue seeded from May through late July (acquired at least 1,000 accumulated GDD) provided 80% or higher grass coverage by the end of the first growing season in both years,while tall fescue seeded on 25 Aug.and 4 Sept.2009 and 13 and 25 Sept.2010 provided less than 50% coverage.When seeded at relatively low rate (49 kg ha-1),Kentucky bluegrass seeded as early as late May did not provide successful coverage (ranged from 19.5% to 29.3%) or visual quality by the following spring,indicating a higher seeding rate or longer establishment period is required.After germinating in petri dishes for 4 weeks under a controlled environment the final germination rates of ZEBA coated and uncoated Kentucky bluegrass were 92.2% and 62.2% respectively at 25/25 oC (day/night temperature).Similarly,the daily germination rates of coated Kentucky bluegrass were 86.4% and 18.2% higher than the uncoated seeds respectively at 25/25 and 10/5 oC.However,the coated seed did not show improved germination or establishment in the field study.
