WINTER CULTURAL PRACTICES AND SHADE IMPACTS ON ‘TIFEAGLE’ BERMUDAGRASS SPRING GREEN-UP

  Turfgrass practitioners desire alternatives to overseeding hybrid bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.X C.transvaalensis Burtt-Davy) because successful spring transition back to bermudagrass following winter overseeding is often unpredictable and results can be undesirable.Turf colorant can improve the turf appearance and television coverage either when the turf is under stress or dormancy.A two-year lysimeter study evaluated the impacts of different cultural practices (overseed,colorant use,as alternative of overseeding,and dormant turfgrass) and in sun and shade on ‘TifEagle’ bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.X C.transvaalensis Burtt-Davy) spring transition and summer performance.Tifeagle sod for overseed,colorant,and control treatments was harvested from field research plots on 8 March 2006 and 15 March 2007 and,placed in lysimeters 40 cm in height and 15 cm in diameter filled with 30 cm of 85:15 sand:peat (v:v) and 10 cm of gravel (8 to 10 mm in diameter) at the Clemson University Turfgrass Research Center,and subjected to full sunlight and 55% continuous shade.Data collection included spring green-up (SGU),visual turfgrass quality ratings (TQ),total shoot chlorophyll,and root total non-structural carbohydrates (TNC).Using a colorant provided the earliest SGU.Shade negatively impacted SGU for all treatments on various rating dates.By the end of May for both years,the overseed sun treatment had 39% greater SGU compared to the overseed shade treatment.Shadegrown colorant-treated TifEagle showed ~37% less SGU from week 2 through week 5 compared to sun-grown colorant treated turf.On the final SGU rating date,sun-grown colorant treatment exhibited greater SGU compared to sun-grown overseed treatment.In July,colorant treated sun-grown TifEagle had a 69% increase in root TNC compared to shadegrown overseeded TifEagle bermudagrass.This study indicates colorant-use provides an alternative to overseeding bermudagrass by providing adequate winter color and a greater SGU under shade treatment.
