ROOT AND SHOOT CHARACTERIZATION OF MUTANT TURF-TYPE BAHIAGRASSES
Bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flügge) is a persistent perennial warm-season grass well adapted to the southern Coastal Plain of US,where it is used primarily as forage for grazing cattle,and to a lesser extent as a low maintenance turfgrass,and as groundcover in crop rotations.Novel bahiagrass genotypes created by inducing somatic mutations from ‘Argentine’ and ‘Wilmington’ cultivars exhibit potential for use in improved landscapes.The study was conducted under greenhouse conditions at the University of Florida,Gainesville,FL,US.The objectives were 1) to characterize the rooting vigor,and 2) compare shoot morphological characteristics of tetraploid mutant bahiagrasses.Ten turf-type mutant lines were compared to the wild-type (WT) cultivars for root and morphological parameters in two experiments,each conducted twice.Changes in root characteristics were observed in this study for mutants derived from both WT genotypes.Fewer changes were observed among the Argentine mutants versus the Wilmington mutants.Some changes were improvements compared to the WT cultivars and other changes were negative; however,many changes were not consistent between the two runs.Morphological traits,such as color,leaf angle,leaf area and shoot dry weight were inconsistent among the derived mutants.Several mutants exhibited increased establishment in at least one run of the experiment.Variability among mutants for leaf lengths,leaf widths and tiller number were very consistent between runs.Mutants of both cultivars had shorter and narrower leaves than the WT′s and often had increased tillering.In conclusion,phenotypic variability was found among the mutants for both root and shoot characteristics.
