DIFFERENTIAL RESPONSE OF BERMUDAGRASS (CYNODON DACTYLON) AND ZOYSIAGRASS (ZOYSIA JAPONICA) VARIETIES TO ARYLOXYPHENOXYPROPIONATE HERBICIDES
Bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.) and zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) are important warm-season turfgrass species.With the recent development of cold-tolerant bermudagrasses,there is a growing problem with bermudagrass encroaching into zoysiagrass turf in Missouri and surrounding states.This study was conducted to determine if cold-tolerant bermudagrass varieties,such as ‘Riviera’,can be effectively managed in zoysiagrass using postemergence applications of aryloxyphenoxypropionate (AOPP) herbicides.Two bermudagrass varieties,‘Quickstand’ and ‘Riviera’,which represent an old and new variety respectively,and two zoysiagrass varieties ‘El Toro’ and ‘Meyer’,were treated with fenoxaprop and fluazifop alone as well as tank-mixed with triclopyr under greenhouse conditions.Treatment effects included discoloration and stunted growth,with herbicide effects more noticeable on bermudagrass compared to zoysiagrass.Among the two bermudagrass varieties,‘Quickstand’ was more sensitive to the AOPP herbicides than ‘Riviera’,with treatments causing 2- to 7-fold greater discoloration.Among the two AOPP herbicides,fluazifop alone resulted in 20% or greater reduction in shoot growth of both bermudagrass and zoysiagrass varieties compared to fenoxaprop alone.When AOPP herbicides were applied alone,shoot growth of ‘El Toro’ zoysiagrass was reduced more than 30% compared to ‘Meyer’.This study suggests that adoption of cold-tolerant bermudagrass varieties,such as ‘Riviera’,may result in greater challenges for selective control of bermudagrass in zoysiagrass turf.
