SELECTIVE AGROSTIS STOLONIFERA L.REMOVAL FROM LOLIUM PERENNE L.WITH MESOTRIONE
Infestations of cool-season turfgrass stands with Agrostis stolonifera L.(creeping bentgrass) can be hard to manage and unattractive.Mesotrione has the ability to selectively control A.stolonifera in established cool-season grass stands.A 4-yr (2007 to 2010) field study was conducted at Pullman,WA to evaluate a long-term program for selective removal of A.stolonifera from Lolium perenne L.(perennial ryegrass).Mesotrione was applied three times at 140 g a.i.ha-1 or four times at 140 g a.i.ha-1 as a single-year (2007 only) or multiple-year (2007,2008,and 2010) treatment. In 2007,2 wk after the first application, plots were overseeded with L.perenne.Mesotrione applied four times at 140 g a.i.ha-1 in 2007 was most effective at reducing the amount of A.stolonifera by June of the following year.In 2008,complete control of A.stolonifera was achieved with mesotrione applied four times. With no treatments in 2009,by June of 2010 the multiple-year four application treatment had < 8% A.stolonifera cover. In 2010,four early summer applications resulted in complete A.stolonifera control by mid-July.In general, phytotoxicity on L.perenne, following all mesotrione applications, was acceptable. This study suggests that a multiple-year program with four applications of mesotrione at 140 g a.i.ha-1 yr-1 can achieve nearly complete A.stolonifera removal from L.perenne.
