‘DIAMOND’ ZOYSIAGRASS PUTTING GREENS IN THE TRANSITION ZONE

‘Diamond’ zoysiagrass Zoysia matrella (L.) Merr. is a fine textured warm-season turfgrass, which is currently being utilized for golf course fairways and tees.Recently,it has been used in the transition zone and the southern regions of North America as a putting green turfgrass. Its shade and salt tolerance, excellent wear tolerance, cold tolerance, and fine texture make it a potential putting green turfgrass cultivar currently being evaluated for putting green use in the transition zone of the US.Diamond zoysiagrass is the newest warm-season putting green turfgrass option in addition to ultradwarf hybrid bermudagrass and seashore paspalum cultivars in the southeastern US and evaluation of its putting green performance is still lacking and needed. This review attempts to provide the current research update of Diamond zoysiagrass as putting greens and fairway uses and the challenges that lie ahead for the future improvement in the following categories of putting green establishment; shade tolerance and plant growth regulator and fertility responses; green playability-ball roll distance (BRD); thatch accumulation, divot injury and management; and pest management.
