EFFECT OF THE PLANT GROWTH REGULATOR TRINEXAPAC-ETHYL ON TURF QUALITY, CONCENTRATION OF TOTAL NONSTUCTURAL CARBOHYDRATES, AND INFECTION OF MICRODOCHIUM NIVALE IN GREENS-TYPE POA ANNUA IN SCANDINAVIA

The effect of application of the plant growth regulator trinexapac-ethyl (TE) every second week from 27 July to 21 Sept.2011 was evaluated on an experimental green with a turf cover of 100% Poa annua in southern Scandinavia.Reductions in leaf growth in August and September due to TE were accompanied with an increase in the concentration of fructan and other nonstructural carbohydrates in turfgrass crowns before winter. The reduction in diseases caused by Microdochium nivale was not significant, but regular application of TE in 2011 improved turfgrass general appearance in spring 2012.We conclude that TE may become a new management tool contributing to better winter survival of turfgrasses in the Nordic countries.
