Deformation Behavior of Clay Rock

Knowledge of deformation behavior of clay rocks hosting radioactive waste is essential to assess the stability and the long-term performance and safety of underground repositories.A large number of short-term and long-term mechanical deformation experiments were carried out on the Callovo-Oxfordian clay rock under various load conditions. The short-term triaxial compression tests aimed at investigating the stress-strain behavior, damage, and damage-induced permeability change. The long-term deformation of the clay rock was studied by uniaxial and triaxial creep testing over extremely long time periods of 1 to 7 years. The post-failure behavior was determined on damaged samples under multiply-applied isostatic and deviatoric stresses. The most important results are presented in this paper.
