Linear PM Machines Having Mixed Grade and Unequal Magnet Height Pole

Since the cost-effective design becomes increasingly critical, the linear permanent magnet (PM) machine having both high magnet usage efficiency which is defined as the ratio of fundamental air-gap flux density (Bag1) over high cost rare-earth PM volume and high cost-effective index which is defined as the ratio of Bag1 over the per unit magnet cost have been very important design concerns for industrial applications. This paper develops slotless linear PM machines having mixed grade and unequal side-magnet height pole, together with Halbach magnetization. It shows that comparing to conventional magnet pole, the developed modular T-type magnet poles exhibit significant potential to simultaneously achieve high magnet usage efficiency and cost-effective index.
