FEA of the Cross-Coupling Effects of a Tubular PM Actuator with Integrated Contactless Energy Transfer

The cross-coupling effects of a novel tubular, permanent magnet, synchronous motor with an integrated coaxial transformer are identified by means of 3D finite element analysis (FEA).A single isotropic soft-magnetic core is applied for the motor and the transformer. The transformer and motor functionalities are decoupled by means of an orthogonal magnetic field orientation of the motor field with respect to the transformer field. However, the nonlinearity of the soft-magnetic material in combination with the superimposed transformer and motor magnetic field gives rise to cross-coupling effects in terms of varying magnetic coupling of the transformer and pulsating disturbance force on the motor. These cross-coupling effects are quantified in this paper.
