Comparative Study of Two Direct Drive Axial-flux PM Machines in Low Duty Cycle Operations
This paper presents a comparative study of two direct drive axial flux (AF) permanent magnet (PM) machines.A review of some key AF machine topologies is first given. Then a novel Segmented-Armature Torus (SAT) machine topology made with laminated stator poles is introduced.Comparisons are then made between an existing AFPM direct drive against a newly proposed one based on a laminated SAT AFPM motor.Finite element analysis (FEA) models of the machines are used to provide their predicted performances,in particular their torque and iron losses. The results show that the new SAT AFPM motor have operational advantages over the existing one with a solid dual-stator configuration.
