Discrete crack analysis of concrete dams based on the time history of inertia force distributions of linear response analysis

　　In Japan the building codes for dams have been upgraded in recent years against the background of the increasing seismic activities, demanding earthquake response analysis to be carried out for dams against large earthquakes. In the case of concrete dams, the Guideline for the Seismic Performance Evaluation of Dams against Large Earthquake requires linear dynamic analysis to be carried out first. If the stress in the dam is found to exceed the material strength, a nonlinear response analysis including crack analysis is mandatory.
