Experimental and Numerical Study of Failure Mechanisms of Syntactic Foams under Compression
Syntactic foams, filling polymer matrix with glass microballoons, are being increasingly used for marine and aerospace industry due to their multifunctional properties. The design of industrial components made of syntactic foam requires a better understanding of the failure mechanisms in the foam under compressive loading condition. In this study, uni-axial compression tests combined with in situ X-ray tomography were performed to record the three dimensional (3D) microstructure change in the foam during the damage process.
