Multiscale crack-tip displacement field measurements by two digital image correlation methods
Characterizing a crack-tip displacement field of a growing crack is important in identifying the actual fracture mode mixing and in evaluating the associated fracture toughness of a material.Experimentally, the conventional forward digital image correlation (DIC) method has been used to measure the crack-tip opening displacement (CTOD) and crack-tip opening angle (CTOA) of a stationary crack and to measure the displacement field some distance away from the tip of a stationary crack for estimating the stress intensity factor. In this paper,we compare two DIC methods for measuring the near crack-tip displacement field at meso- and micro-scales by digital microscopy. The two methods called the extended DIC method and the adaptive backward DIC method respectively are used to extract local displacement field vectors around a crack-tip.
