Enhancement of nitrobenzene bioreduction by the combination of Shewanella species and mediator-functionalized biocarriers
The biotransformation of nitroaromatics under anaerobic conditions can be improved by the addition of quinonoid mediators. However, continuous dosing and discharge of some biologically recalcitrant quinoids will result in the secondary contamination. In present study, the performance of the combination of Shewanella species and anthraquinone-2-sulfonate-modified polyurethane foam (Shewanella/AQS-PUF) in the anaerobic treatment of nitrobenzene was investigated. The results showed that Shewanella/AQS-PUF accelerated significantly nitrobenzene bioreduction with nitrobenzene removal rote up to 0.13 mM.h-1.It is also found that AQS-PUF can induce Shewanella species to secrete more flavins (126.2μg L-1) as redox mediator for nitrobenzene bioreduction although extracellular flavins decreased with increasing nitrobenzene concentration, and that synergistic effect between Shewanella species and AQS-PUF was observed for promoting nitrobenzene biotransformation with 5-fold increase in first-order rate constant compared to that without AQS-PUF.These results demonstrated that Shewanella/AQS-PUF has potential applications in the bioremediation of recalcitrant pollutants in water.
