Quantitation of pharmaceuticals in environmental samples collected near small swine farms in southern korean peninsula
Pharmaceuticals are used for various purposes such as the prevention and treatment of disease, and growth-promotion of the animal.Once consumed by human beings and animals, only 10-70% pharmaceuticals are partially metabolized, and excreted out in an active form.Eventually, they can enter into ground water sources as well as surface waters for the drinking water sources, posing a threat to aquatic ecosystems. As of 2011,there are about 1,700 small swine farms in the southern region of the Korean Peninsula. The number of swine grown in these farms is over 2 million. In the region, most swine manure is recycled as a fertilizer. Some of the processed manure is even sold to other area.
