Experimental and theoretical insights into photochemical and photocatalytic degradation mechanism of preservative propylparaben in water

Parabens are important antimicrobial preservatives that are widely used in many commercial products such as cosmetics, shampoo, creams, and paper 1.Recently,it has raised concern about the potential risks to aqueous organisms and humans due to their acute and chronic toxicity2,3.It is therefore essential to investigate the transformation characteristics, degradation mechanism and potential risks of these emerging contaminants (ECs) to under the fate in water environments.Hence, propylparaben (PPB) as a typical example of this family ECs was examined in both photochemical and photocatalytic degradation system, with detailed discussions on the initial reaction mechanism and the potential risks assessment of the degradation products.
