Challenge of urban water quality and advances in drinking water treatment technologies

Urbanization has great impact on the drinking water quality in urban areas. The challenges of drinking water quality in urban area are discussed such as micropollutant, the global warming effect and the water treatment by-products.The advances in preoxidation process with permanganate and ferrate was introduced with respect to organic micropollutants and algae removal, taste or odor control.A novel combined process of new type of sedimentation and dissolved air flotation to enhance the removal of algae and organic matters was introduced, which has the advantages of high adaptability, low cost and high efficiency for upgrading the existing conventional water treatment plants. In addition,a combined advanced treatment process of catalytic ozonation and upflow biological activated carbon for the enhanced removal of stable organic micropollutants was also introduced. The presentation will introduce the engineering applications of these technologies in water treatment plants.
