Photodegradation of aniline in NO2--containing aqueous solutions

NO2-is an important environmental factor which is a source of ·OH or·NO2 radicals.NO2-and HNO2 are absorbing species with their maximum absorption wavelengths at 350-360nm.In this work, aniline which is the prototype of aromatic amines has been investigated.Experiments show that phenol,o-nitrophenol and p-nitrophenol are the main products.Phenol was generated either under irradiation or in the dark, whereas the irradiation conditions lead to a significantly higher yield. Also, the coexistence of ferric chloride and sodium nitrite enhances the generation of phenol as compared to the case with only sodium nitrite.Nitration of aniline has not been observed, while o-nitrophenol and p-nitrophenol were found after irradiation. The addition of isopropanol largely decreases the degradation rate of aniline and the formation rate of phenol, which shows that ·OH plays an important role in these processes. In addition, lower pH promotes the photodegradation of aniline, which is presumably related to the different forms of iron ions under different pH conditions.
