Mechanistic investigation of PhotocatalyticHydroxylation of Aromatics by Isotope labeling technique
As a large group of organic chemicals, and due to their great effecton environmental pollution, the aromatics have been the most frequently used model substrates to investigate the photocatalytic mechanism and to test the activity of the photocatalysts1,2.Hydroxylation is regarded as the primary step, and even the rate-determining step,of the whole photocatalytic mineralization of aromatics. However, the detailed mechanism about the hydroxylation of aromatics is stillunclear. In our study, detailed isotopic labeling experiments and products quantification were performed to investigate thephotocatalytic hydroxylation of aromatic compounds. It was found that:1.The main O2-incorporation pathway involves the reduction of O2 by ecb-and the subsequent formation of free ·OH via H2O2,which was usually overlooked in the past studies. Moreover,in the hydroxylation initiated by hvb+,the O-atom in O2 cannot incorporate into the product via the direct coupling between molecular O2 and the substrate-based radicals3.
