Biogeochemical mechanisms of iron cycles and its environmental applications

Iron has long been a recognized physiological requirement for life, but for many microorganisms, its role extends well beyond a nutritional necessity.Given that iron is the fourth most abundant element on the Earth, iron biogeochemical cycles, including microbially mediated Fe(Ⅲ) reduction and Fe(Ⅱ) oxidation processes, have great potential to couple the nutrient cycles with contaminant transformation as well as to support various microbial populations in soil and sedimentary environments. We have systematically investigated chemical reaction mechanisms coupled with microbiological activities of iron biogeochemical cycles in subtropical soils and its environmental applications.
