Degradation of thyroid hormone disruptors by UV-254 nm assisted advanced oxidation processes
Incidents of endocrine disruption reported due to the discharge of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) into the environment have been increasing continuously in recent years 1-2.EDCs not only refer to the well-known estrogen mimetic compounds,but also include chemicals that can alter the thyroid metabolism 3,which is essential for regulation of brain function,food metabolism,neurodevelopment,and protein synthesis 4.However,compared to estrogen disruption,little data are available about the disruption of the thyroid system 5.Thyroid hormone disruptors (THD),even in small amounts in the environment,could alter thyroid homeostasis,which in turn may adversely affect human health 6.A broad variety of compounds can be defined as THD resulting from their potential interference with thyroid function,such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs),bisphenol A (BPA),and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) 7-9.To study the degradation of THD,thyroxine (3,3,5,5-tetraiodo-l-thyronine,T4) and β-1actam antibiotics were used as model compounds.T4 is the major thyroid hormone synthesized from the thyroid gland to deal with hypothyroidism 10.This compound has been found in the effluent of wastewater treatment plants 11,and it can be a potential water contaminant with a severe impact on human and aquatic organisms due to its high biological activity 12.Moreover,broad-spectrum antibiotics with heterocyclic side chains,such as cephalosporin,have been reported to inhibit peroxidase-catalyzed iodination 13,thus the β-lactam antibiotics,ampicillin and cephalothin,were also studied as THD in this project.
