Integrating membrane filtration with photo-, electrocatalytic and advanced oxidation processes for enhanced water treatment

There are many challenges in the field of water and wastewater treatment in China:(1) The environmental standards have been becoming more and more strict; (2) huge amount of wastewater was discharged into natural water systems each year; (3) many toxic chemicals, such as pesticides, persistent organic pollutants (POPs),PPCPs,and other persistent toxic substances (PTS) were detected in aquatic systems. These challenges require more advanced technology for cost-effective treatment of water/wastewater treatment. Some advanced technologies, such as membrane filtration and advanced oxidation technologies (AOTs),have been taken more and more attention due to more strict environmental standards for wastewater discharging, and the requirement of wastewater reclamation in industries. However, membrane filtration or AOTs alone has some problems in water and wastewater treatment. For example, membrane filtration could not destroy chemical pollutants, which may cause risk of recontamination.Furthermore, fouling on the membrane surface is a serious problem that hinders the application of membrane in water or wastewater treatment.
