PROPOSAL OF A PERMEABLE GUTTER WITH CONSIDERATION FOR ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION

As a result of localized torrential rain associated with recent changes in rainfall characteristics, roadside ditches tend to overflow more frequently at their extremities, thereby damaging surrounding private and public land. The enormous costs involved in ensuring smooth water flow at the extremities of ditches to prevent such damage are a problem in construction projects.Accordingly,a study was conducted to investigate a drainage technique based on the use of permeable drainage structures (ditches) to reduce the risk of damage cost-effectively and to avoid placing burdens on the end of such structures.Conventional concrete troughs have a negative impact on the environment and ecosystems because small animals that fall into them become trapped, and such structures restrict their sphere of movement.Conversely, permeable roadside ditches from which small animals can escape represent environmentally friendly structures that are expected to contribute to the establishment of a low-carbon society based on the use of materials that do not release carbon dioxide during production.
