PREDICTION OF THE SIDE SHEAR RESISTANCE FOR DRILLED SHAFTS SOCKETED INTO ROCK

The paper presents the case study of 65 piles tests under axial compression loading. These piles were constructed at different sites (in situ and laboratory tests). The ground formation mainly consists of sedimentary rock such as limestone, mudstone, shale, etc. And the strength of rock varied from the very soft rock to relatively hard rock.To present an evaluation of several design methods used to calculate the unit side shear resistance of the piles embedded into rock.A comparison was made between the measured side shear resistance from the loading tests and the predicted side shear resistance obtained from the different empirical methods. It was found that the predicted unit side shear resistances obtained by Kulhawy and Phoon (1993) for the reasonable lower bound are in agreement with the mean values obtained from the available data. And the use of linear functions depends on the socket type and the range of the unconfined compressive strength of rock.
