APPLICATION OF ADVANCED SENSORS TO MODEL TESTS ON BEARING MECHANISM OF GROUP PILE

Model pile loading and transparent observation in dry silica sand were conducted with applying confining pressure of 50 ~ 200kPa at the model ground surface to investigate the behavior of a pile group. The pile group consists of 9 cylindrical model piles of 40mm in diameter in most tests or 3 rectangular parallelepiped model piles in the transparent observation. And two kinds of pile spacings were used in the models:200mm and 100mm between pile centers. To investigate the interaction among group piles,2 kinds of advanced sensors were installed in addition to strain gauges inside the model piles:tactile sensors to measure the pressure distribution in the ground and colored sand layer with PIV analysis to reveal the ground deformation. The tests results showed that the pile group with a narrow l00mm spacing affected a wider area of the ground and the interaction was more significant below tips. These affected the beating behavior of the pile group.
