FIELD EXPERIMENTS ON UNIT BASE RESISTANCE IN MUDSTONE AND SANDSTONE

The unit base resistance is proportional to the unconfined compression strength of intact rock. Its calculated value is the product of the unconfined compression strength of intact rock and the bearing coefficients which are related to the rock type, socket depth, rock mass rating.Based on 14 static loading tests including 7 tests in mudstone and 7 tests in sandstone respectively, the effects on unit base resistance were analyzed for the rock type and weathering grade. The results indicate the initial slope of linear segment of the curve of base resistance versus settlement is not very different for mudstone with different weathering grade. The bearing coefficient of the weaker rock (mudstone) is far more than that of weak rock (sandstone). The initial slope of line segment of the curve of base resistance versus settlement of sandstone is larger than that of mudstone, and the deformation modulus of sandstone is 2 ~ 6 times that of mudstone.
