MODEL TESTS ON BARRIER PERFORMANCE OF THE BENTONITE MIXED SOIL LAYER UNDERGOING LOCAL SETTLEMENT

In Japan, bentonite mixed soil (BMS) layer is often adopted for barrier system on the bottom and side slope in landfill. The BMS layer placed on the bottom may be subject to local settlement. This induces cracking the BMS layer. In this study, the authors conducted trap door tests for the BMS layer with a thickness of 10cm and a length of 80cm.The center part with a length of 50cm of the bottom of the steel tank was lowered by an electric screw jack at a rate of 0.5mm/min.During the trap door lowered, change of supporting force by trap door was measured through load transducers and deformation behavior including crocking was recorded by video camera. After trap door test,de-aired water with a pressure of 9.8kN/m2 was supplied into protective sand placed on the BMS layer to estimate barrier performance. As a result,it is found that the BMS layer underlaid with no geonet had a crack at the bottom surface when the trap door lowered by about 4mm and the crack reached top surface at a settlement of about 20mm.The BMS layer which experienced a settlement of 30mm had cracks with an open of 1 to 15mm and the bentonite was washed away.On the other hand, the BMS layer underlaid with a geonet had also a crack when the trap door lowered by about 5mm but the crack did not progress to top surface even when it lowered to 40mm.
