GRADING DEPENDENT STRESS-STRAIN BEHAVIOR OF GRANULAR MATERIALS

The effect of soil grading on the stress-strain and the critical state behavior of granular materials are investigated by employing the three-dimensional discrete element method. Two types of loading conditions are considered in the simulation:the axial compression under constant lateral pressure (conventional triaxial drained test) and the constant volume compression (conventional triaxial undrained test). It was found that the critical state lines of the specimens shift down with grading of specimens broadening. The specimen with a wider particle distribution exhibits more contractive and shows strain hardening upon sheafing in both drained and undrained tests.
