PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF CAPILLARY BARRIER OF SOIL INTO A SHALLOW LAND WASTE REPOSITORY

A simple soil layer system which is composed of a finer soil (sand)layer underlain by a coarser soil (gravel)layer provides an excellent property of capillary bamer.Infiltration water is suspended just above an interface between the soil layers and diverted downward along the interface, with the result that a vertical movement of water into deeper soil layers below the interface is reduced into zero within some length along the interface. The water diversion provided by the capillary barrier of soil is examined by the field measurement of soil moisture content. The diversion lengths are measured in the laboratory soil box tests, and compared well with the estimations calculated by the theoretical equation proposed by Steenhuis,et al.in 1991.Based on the results obtained in the field measurement and the laboratory soil box tests,a shallow land repository is proposed to isolate a hazardous waste material or a very low level radioactive waste. The shallow land repository is covered by an upper capillary barrier of soil to reduce the infiltration due to rainfall, and placed by a bottom capillary barrier of soil to divert the infiltrating water through the waste materials.A special feature of the capillary barrier of soil is that it can maintain its function of water diversion for an extremely long duration because it consists of natural materials such as sand and gravel.
