A SIMPLE METHOD FOR PREDICTING SWELLING OF BENTONITE AND SAND MIXTURES

  Bentonite-sand mixture has been chosen as possible buffer/backfill materials in the deep geological disposal to isolate the high level radioactive waste.The relation between the void ratio and the swelling pressure of compacted bentonite-sand mixture at full saturation is independent on the initial conditions such as initial dry density and initial water content and dependent on the bentonite content.Based on an experimental result that the relation between the montmodllonite void ratio and the swelling pressure is a unique straight line in their log scales for bentonite-sand mixtures immersed in the same solution,a simple method was proposed to predict the swelling deformation and pressure.The experimental data of three bentonites published in literature are compared with predicted results and it is found they are in good agreement.
