PHYSICO-CHEMICAL AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF CEMENT/LIME LIGHTLY TREATED CLAYEY SOILS
Some of physico-chemical and mechanical properties of lime and cement lightly treated Ariake clay and dredged mud from an estuary were investigated. The amounts of the lime or the cement added were 2% ~ 8% by dry weight. For physico-chemical properties, mainly the grain size distribution,pH value of the mixture and micro-structure from the image of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were studied, and for mechanical properties, shear strength (Su) by unconfined compression test and consolidation behavior were analyzed. When the cement additive is less than 4% or 2% for lime, there are obvious changes in particle size distribution but insignificant change for Su value and consolidation yielding stress. There is a shift from predominant clay particles to silt and fine sand particles with the increase of the additives. The further analysis using the images of SEM indicates that the change of the mechanical properties is related to the change of microstructure of the soils.
