EFFECT OF MIXING RATIO ON MEMBRANE BEHAVIOR OF CLAY-BENTONITE COMPOSITE MATERIAL

Compacted clay liners could be improved if they exhibit semi-permeable membrane behavior to restrict migration of contaminant.Bentonite already proved effective as additive to improve membrane behavior of clay. Thus in this research, one type of local clay (Fukakusa clay) amended with bentonite under different mixing ratio (0,5%,10%,15% and 20%) were evaluated for hydraulic conductivity and membrane behaviors.According to results, membrane behavior for clay was very low even neglected, although hydraulic conductivity k was suitably low (around 10-9 m/s).Besides,membrane behaviors were found to decrease continually as KCI concentration difference increased. The results suggest that compacted clay liners with natural clay exhibit hardly membrane behavior unless bentonite or other highly swelling soil is introduced.
