EVALUATION OF INSTABILITY OF SLOPES UNDER HEAVY RAINFALL BASED ON REALTIME MONITORING OF DEFORMATION AND WATER CONTENTS

Sensing and monitoring are cost-effective countermeasures against slope failure disasters.Criteria of issuing warning based on the monitored data are essential for this purpose. Two methods are widely employed at present. The one is monitoring the rainfall intensity, and warning is issued when the amount of rainfall exceeds a prescribed critical value. The other one is monitoring the displacement on the surface of slopes, and warning is issued when the displacement rate exceeds a critical value. However, the criteria of both methods are defined empirically, and neither of them is based on physical characteristics of slope materials and structures. In this paper, results from model tests, element tests, and a field test are reported, and an attempt to establish new criteria of issuing warning for slope failures is presented.Relations between the deformation and the volumetric water content of unsaturated soils are observed in the tests. And,some examples of idea to use combined sets of data on the displacement and the volumetric water content of slopes.
