Rumen acidosis:mechanisms and future implications

Experimentally-induced subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) has been linked to inflammation and increases in lipopolysaccharideendotoxin (LPS) in rumen digesta. It has been hypothesized that the inflammation is caused by this increase in LPS.This hypothesis was tested by experimentally inducing SARA by feeding a high-grain diet or by feeding a diet containing pellets of ground alfalfa and using the acute phase response as a marker of inflammation. These studies showed that in the absence of high LPS in the large intestine,a combination of a low pH and high LPS in the rumen might not cause inflammation. This suggests that a rise in LPS in hind-gut digesta due to high starch and excessive fermentation contributes to inflammation, possibly due to the translocation of LPS from the hind gut into the interior circulation of the body. The studies also demonstrated that SARA might reduce the healthfulness of milk by altering the fatty acid profile.
