Frequent Milking in Early Lactation:Biology and Management
Increasing the frequency of milk removal increases milk yield during an established lactation.In cows,the response is fixed across production levels at approximately 3.5 kg/d,and the higher yields persist as long as the higher milking frequency is maintained.During early lactation,however,there appears to be a window of sensitivity to milking frequency responses such thata portion of the higher yield will continue to be observed even if a lower frequency is implemented later,i.e.4X to 2X milking.There are management considerations that require consideration before implementation of early lactation frequent milking,including nutrition,housing,and time budgets for cows being millked more that 2X.
