The EEG Application as an Assessment Method of Animal Welfare

Welfare is defined as the state of physical and mental health of the animals which is reasonably achievable under conditions of complete harmony between the organism and the surrounding environment. The paper presents the electroencephalographic study (EEG)as useful diagnostic method of animal welfare evaluation. The EEG summarises the electrical activity generated by neurons in the cerebral cortex. This phenomenon is a specific tool used for receiving and recording bioelectrical activity from the central nervous system,as well as for analysing its basic functions. Most of the bodys reactions take place in the brain, therefore monitoring of its functions, including the response to various stimuli, may be helpful in physiological and behavioural methods of animal welfare assessment.
