Livestock,Resources and Human Demand:The Sustainability Debate

Sir John Beddington (the UKs Chief Scientific Adviser)argues for more sustainable livestock as one element of a new greener revolution in food production (Beddington 2009).Development of sustainable livestock farming practices appears to fall into two categories: sustainable intensification or a reduction in demand for meat, eggs and milk through modification of consumer behaviour. This paper examines global demand for animal products, which is forecast to increase as a result of global population growth and the emergence of an increasingly affluent middle class in developing countries.and the associated issue of hioethics. However, there is currently little comparative evidence to indicate that one is more sustainahle than the other in terms of their impact on production systems, usage of global supplies of energy and water, potential contrihutions to maintaining human health and meeting future demand for food.
