REVIEW OF THE LIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN OF MOULDS AND DIES

  The increasing demands to overcome the overweight problem of conventionally designed moulds and dies pose new challenges for academia and industry.In this paper,the types and the state of the arts of the advanced method of lightweight design were firstly reviewed.Most of the prior researches were focused on the automotive and construction engineering industries,with less attention was paid to the mould and die industry.The characteristics of moulds and dies were then analyzed.The suitability of different types of moulds and dies for lightweight design were evaluated,the results of which indicated that sheet metal forming dies and forging dies were more feasible for lightweight design using structural optimization method compared to other types of moulds and dies.Further studies considering comprehensive evaluation criteria and life cycle assessment (LCA) were needed but have not been addressed in prior arts.
