A KNOWLEDGE MODEL FOR SUSTAINABLE AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERING DESIGN

  Sustainable development is a global issue and thus has significant influence in various sectors.As the worldwide problems,such as global warming,energy shortage and global financial crisis emerge and become increasingly serious,sustainable development has been paid more attentions by practitioners and researchers.Theories,strategies and tools are being proposed and developed to achieve sustainable development in different areas.The automotive industry involves heavy energy consumption,resources utilisation and gas emission,and as such,has an urgent demand for sustainability.Sustainable design,which is aimed at taking account sustainable development issues at the design stage,has been identified as an effective way for achieving sustainable development for the automotive industry.Current work on sustainable design is mainly focused on specific design issues while little work has been done on supporting the whole design process.Moreover,there are few tools on managing sustainable design knowledge which is beneficial for supporting design decision-making.Therefore,this research is aimed at addressing this gap by developing a knowledge model for the knowledge management systems in the automotive industry.This paper presents the development of the model that incorporates the major parts critical for vehicle sustainability such as design,materials selection,manufacture/remanufacture and product function.Besides,the architecture of an information system is described,along with the application and preliminary evaluation undertaken in an automotive design project.
