FACTORY MODELLING:CHALLENGES FOR ASSESSING RESOURCE EFFICIENCY AT SCALE
The move towards eco-efficient,even sustainable, manufacturing systems will require an integration of technologies, systems and processes across whole factories.Examining factories as an integration of production systems, utilities and building is necessary to consider the flow of all resources, including energy, materials and water, but brings with it the challenge of scope of analysis.Modelling and simulation tools have potential to capture and analyse the complexity at the scale of factories but challenges exist to exploit these tools fully. This paper examines work carried out on large scale eco-efficient factory modelling and presents issues that must be tackled to make further progress.
