ANALYSIS OF THE ENERGY CONSUMPTION AND EMISSIONS OF PASSENGER VEHICLE PLASTIC PARTS BY EIO-LCA

Along with the increasing requirements for the aesthetics, light weight, fuel efficiency, and performance of passenger vehicles, the proportion of plastic parts in automobiles continues to grow.In 2011,the proportion of plastic used in Chinese passenger vehicles exceeded 1.4 million tons.In this article, the energy consumption and environmental emissions during the manufacture of plastic components for Chinese passenger vehicles were calculated and analyzed by economic input-output life cycle assessment (EIO-LCA).Results indicate that the manufacture of automotive plastic components is a high-energy consumption and pollutant discharge industry. In 2011,the consumption of coal, crude oil, natural gas,and electric power exceeded 8.9 million tons,1.75 million tons, and 281.36 million cube meter of 7,103.5 million kWh,respectively. Moreover, the sewage discharge reached 45.66 million tons, and the industrial sulfur dioxide, smoke, dust, and waste emissions reached 64498,20039,6548.7,and 32338 tons, respectively. This work highlights the need for China to strengthen research on recycling technology for discarded automotive plastic components.Such reinforcement is possible through the effective and quantitative analysis of the energy consumed and pollutants emitted during the manufacture of automotive plastic parts.A development model of recycling discarded vehicle plastic components for the Chinese automobile industry is proposed.
