A METHOD OF GREEN MANUFACTURING OF ORTHOSES BASED ON RECONFIGURABLE MOULDS
Moulds for orthoses are often dedicated, the problems associated with which include lack of flexibility, long leading time, material waste and low-efficiency usage of moulds, have caused serious environmental pollution as well as financial bums. This paper presents an innovative method to replace traditionally dedicated moulds with reconfigurable moulds utilizing screw-pins that are directly transferred to the vacuum forming of thermoplastic material at low cost for the manufacturing of orthoses. In this system, the fast surface reconstruction of human anatomy based on the digital scanning,is firstly introduced, the reconfigurable mould based on screw pins is then generated accordingly based on the scanned human anatomy. After this, vacuum forming is performed on the reconfigurable mould which could be reused for different patients. In addition,in order to significantly reduce the mould preparation time,a support database is to be developed to store a number of scanned anatomies, the best practices of experienced technicians, optimal parameters for scanning, mould scanning and adjustment and vacuum forming, which will allow rapid recall of the stored information to reduce the repeatable work thus reduce the preparation time and improve efficiency.
