CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT FOR SUSTAINABILITY EDUCATION:A UNIT ON DESIGN AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
The design and development of products and services must increasingly allow for their environment impact and help move economies onto a sustainable path.This situation raises the need for a programme of fundamental research to thoroughly understand the sustainability problems and effectively approach them from various angles.A key issue is the education of the future generation engineers to help them obtain sound appreciation of the environmental impact of waste by-products throughout the product life-cycle and to apply effective solutions to the design and development of sustainable products and services.Thus curriculum development for sustainable development needs to be studied to offer the provision of curricular topics that are selected to fit with societal,economic and technological needs.This paper presents the development of a design and sustainable development unit,introduces the framework for its curriculum development,describes the rational selection of various subjects,and discusses the main findings of the development.
